Fair Oaks 1862
Fair Oaks 1862
This Osprey title details General George B. McClellan's controversial Peninsula campaign and the southern attempt to halt the Union juggernaut during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Following its humiliating defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, McClellan took command of the Union Army of the Potomac. In the spring of 1862, having rebuilt his forces, the "Little Napoleon" devised a plan to end the war in a single campaign. Transporting his army by sea to the Virginia Peninsula, he would outflank Confederate forces and march unopposed on Richmond, the Southern capital. Excessive caution squandered the opportunity, however, and on 31 May the Confederates struck at McClellan's divided forces at Fair Oaks.

The Mechanic (Fair Oaks Book 1)
The Mechanic (Fair Oaks Book 1)
We go together like champagne and whiskey. Now we're married!OliviaGage Carter is the poster boy for rude, rugged, and obnoxious. He’s the town’s mechanic. When he’s not giving me a hard time about my car, he’s mocking my city girl ways. He's a small town roughneck with a dirty reputation and a mouth to match. I'm a city girl. We go together like champagne and whiskey. People told me he was trouble. But that didn’t stop me from craving his filthy promises that make my blood pound for hours. Or having full body shivers whenever he says my name. This joy ride’s gone too far. Now we’re married—by accident—no less. The town’s most ineligible bachelor is my husband. Oh, and I’m pregnant.——GageThe last thing I need is a wife…Especially a high-maintenance one like Olivia Stewart. I’ve got no patience for a demanding, feisty city girl who thinks she can walk into my business and order me around. But now that I’ve tasted her, I can’t get her out of my mind. She may be a burr in my side but she’s as sweet as honey. When she’s not driving me crazy, she’s driving me wild. One problem: Some puffed-up rich boy from San Francisco thinks she’s his, and he’ll make my life hell if I don’t give her up.Good luck with that. I can’t be bought, and I’m not giving up my wife and baby.He wants a fight? This means war.

The Detective (Fair Oaks Book 2)
I should have done my duty, but instead I did her dirty.HeathDon't be fooled by the uniform. There's badge around my neck, but that doesn't make me a hero. The Diaries of Adam & Eve: Translated by Mark Twain
The Diaries of Adam & Eve: Translated by Mark Twain
Through his imagined journals of Adam and Eve, Mark Twain wrote what has been called "one of the great love stories of all time." Mandy Patinkin and Betty Buckley bring Adam and Eve to life, capturing the expected humor as well as the tender eloquence of Twain's most personal, heartfelt writing. In one of his last recordings, Walter Cronkite provides an illuminating commentary on how the author came to reinterpret the Genesis story. This expanded edition, unlike any other version, incorporates previously unpublished passages as well as Mark Twain's mislaid final revision of "Adam's Diary."

Fair Oaks (CA) (Images of America)
Fair Oaks (CA) (Images of America)
Fair Oaks, in the gently undulating foothills along Highway 50, has something in common with its vast neighbor, Sacramento. Early land speculators, politicians, and Chicago businessmen formed a partnership to sell off one of their "Sunset Colonies," deservedly dubbed Fair Oaks, promising water systems and a suburban railroad to help colonists grow prize citrus. The farmers came, but when the investors retreated east, a railroad and water had not appeared. A later investment group did build a bridge and railroad, encouraging more farmers until, at the height of the Great Depression, nature laid a cold hand on the land, freezing all of the citrus. But other orchard crops and vineyards flourished, while more bridges and proximity to the state capital helped transform the farm town into a charming suburb, where residents can still gather at the local cafe or brave the red bluffs and rushing waters of the American River.

State Fair (Bur Oak Book)
State Fair (Bur Oak Book)
First published in the spring of 1932, Phil Stong's whimsical and wise State Fair was an immediate success. Hollywood released a film that fall starring Will Rogers as Abel Frake and a champion hog from an Iowa farm as the famous Blue Boy, "the finest Hampshire stud boar in the world." In 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical motion picture launched such memorable songs as "It Might as Well Be Spring." In 1962 a movie musical with Pat Boone and Ann-Margret was set at the Texas State Fair. And in 1995 a highly entertaining adaptation of the 1945 musical premiered at the Iowa State Fair before moving on to Broadway. This paperback edition of State Fair, with a new foreword by Robert McCown, reprints the original novel in all its exuberance and freshness. On the surface State Fair simply recounts the adventures of the close-knit Frake family at the Iowa State Fair in the late 1920s, but Stong's universal morality tale has much to reveal to anyone willing to read between the lines. The book shocked some readers in 1932, but most were captivated by the Frakes' good-natured integrity and applauded their spirit. Readers today will find the same joy, liveliness, and insight in this new edition of State Fair.

The Battle of Fair Oaks: Turning Point of McClellan's Peninsula Campaign
The Battle of Fair Oaks: Turning Point of McClellan's Peninsula Campaign
In the spring of 1862, Union Major General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac launched a bloody offensive up the Virginia Peninsula in an effort to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. This study chronicles the pivotal but often overlooked turning point of the Peninsula Campaign--the Battle of Fair Oaks, also known as Seven Pines. At Fair Oaks, Confederate troops succeeded in driving back Union forces from the edge of Richmond before the Union troops stabilized their position. Though both sides claimed victory, the battle marked the end of the Union offensive. Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart, and Winfield Scott Hancock all rose to national prominence for their roles at Fair Oaks, while McClellan saw his reputation ruined. In the end, the legacy of Fair Oaks is one of missed chances and faulty execution, ensuring the war would continue for nearly three more years.
