What's In A Name?: A Historical Perspective of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport 1925-2014
William Berry Hartsfield was Atlanta’s longest serving mayor, serving six terms. By many aviation experts, he was considered the “Father of Aviation” in Atlanta. This is a story about the airport’s history and it’s names. Maynard Jackson was Atlanta’s first African-American mayor, serving three terms. From it’s humble beginnings to present day, explore how a run down racetrack became the world’s busiest airport. It is a fascinating, fun read, not a boring history. I trust you will enjoy “What’s in a Name?”

Dante's Airport: What If Hell For The Modern Man Is Modeled After The Atlanta Airport?
Dante's Airport: What If Hell For The Modern Man Is Modeled After The Atlanta Airport?
How many times have you heard someone say, “If Dante Alighieri was alive today and writing The Inferno, the Atlanta airport would be the third level of hell?” It happens to me most weekdays and twice on Saturdays so I wondered what Dante’s epic tale would be like without the references to 14th century people, places and events that are unknown to 21st century readers. For those who do not remember their CliffsNotes, The Inferno is part of The Divine Comedy, an epic poem written by Dante in the early 1300s. In the story Dante struggles to find his way in life until he is assisted by the poet Virgil who takes Dante on a journey through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio) and Heaven (Paradiso). Along the way Dante meets historical figures and his contemporaries who populate the various levels of the three regions he visits. Virgil and the inhabitants explain why they are assigned their places in the afterlife. The torments and the suffering Dante describes in his version of hell are still the most horrific in literature.Dante’s hell is a series of levels within an Italian mountain. In this story, the levels are part of a major modern airport.

Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World's Busiest Airport
Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World's Busiest Airport
In the months leading up to the birth of her first child, Hannah Palmer discovers that all three of her childhood houses have been wiped out by the expansion of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Having uprooted herself from a promising career in publishing in her adopted Brooklyn, Palmer embarks on a quest to determine the fate of her lost homes—and of a community that has been erased by unchecked Southern progress.Palmer's journey takes her from the ruins of kudzu-covered, airport-owned ghost towns to carefully preserved cemeteries wedged between the runways; into awkward confrontations with airport planners, developers, and even her own parents. Along the way, Palmer becomes an amateur detective, an urban historian, and a mother.Lyrically chronicling the overlooked devastation and beauty along the airport’s fringe communities in the tradition of John Jeremiah Sullivan and Leslie Jamison, Palmer unearths the startling narratives about race, power, and place that continue to shape American cities.Part memoir, part urban history, Flight Path: A Search for My Roots beneath the World's Busiest Airport is a riveting account of one young mother's attempt at making a home where there’s little home left.
