Kaisa (Lena Headey) is a hard-edged, feisty young Scottish woman basking in the attention of her co-workers as they celebrate her recent promotion at their highly respected London law firm. The next morning, the telephonerings and an agitated Kaisa orders her one-night-stand to hit the road. Her mother, Helen (Charlotte Rampling), is calling with an unusual request: she wants Kaisa to go to Norway, pick up her alcoholic father, Tomas (Stellan Skarsgard), and bring him back to Aberdeen, where he has promised to try an experimental detox program. The lure of the reward, Tomas' vintage Alfa Romeo, outweighs Kaisa's discomfort with seeing the man who abandoned her family 10 years earlier. As expected, the reunion is more bitter than sweet. But what Kaisa doesn'texpect is the tumultuous series of events that follow. Tomas is unimpressed with Kaisa's fancy suits and sharp tongue. He criticizes her for being too "angry and masculine." Kaisa, in turn, is disgusted with theodious drunkard who steals her money, vomits on her designer clothes, and to her surprise, has no intention of beginning a detox program and never did. Kaisa's mother has ambushed her, and when Kaisa learns why, she is even more desperate to complete her mission. After a heart-wrenching sceneat the Oslo airport where an uptight airline employee prevents Kaisa and her father from boarding their flight due to Tomas' apparent insobriety, the unlikely couple is to spend much more time together than they had hoped - as they make the long journey to Scotland by car. Along the way, they meet Clive (Ian Hart), who is pivotal in helping Kaisa let down her emotional defenses and accept her father back into her life.
$7.99Aberdeen Proving Ground (MD) (Images of America)
Situated in southeastern Harford County and edged by the Chesapeake Bay and the Bush and Gunpowder Rivers, the U.S. Army bases known as Aberdeen Proving Ground, Edgewood Arsenal, and Fort Hoyle have been home to ordnance, chemical, technology, and artillery commands. The photographs in this volume include scenes of the fertile farmlands of Aberdeen, Edgewood, and Michaelsville, and their transformation, which began in 1917, into the military base known today as Aberdeen Proving Ground, or APG. Views of daily life on base include the “Toonerville” Trolley, a small-scale train that shuttled commuting personnel between the main gate and the buildings on post. The images document changes in the ways wars have been fought and changes in society as a result of war. Brave officers voluntarily tested the effects of mustard agent and other chemical weapons on protective clothing and gas masks. Local women sewed gas masks for troops and civilians. Women moved into key jobs on base during World War II, manufacturing and maintaining tanks and weapons systems as the need for great numbers of troops depleted the workforce of civilian males. APG scientists led the way into the computer age when they developed ENIAC, the first electronic digital computer.

The Industrial Revolution, along with free land, created fierce competition among American railroad companies to connect the country with a web of track. Goods, as well as people, needed to be transported. The railroads would create towns, then profit from the sale of the land and transporting of people and goods. The plan worked brilliantly, as there were no other means of transportation―or roads―to these new communities. Aberdeen, platted in 1881, was known as an “end of line” stop for several years. During this time, the town boomed into a city. Main Street sprawled southward, and wooden boomtown businesses were quickly replaced with elaborate brick buildings, some six stories tall. Examples of Aberdeen’s eclectic style of architecture, spanning nearly 60 years, can be found within Images of America: Aberdeen. Many of these treasures still exist today; others, along with their lost stories, are forever preserved here.
